Jan Balakian’s “Dreams on Fire”
Part of our New Jersey Women Playwrights Project

 
Jan Balakian is a Professor of English at Kean University.  She received her Ph.D. from Cornell’s, M.A.T. Brown and her B.A. from Bucknell University, where she won writing prizes. Her student play won Cornell’s Prize. Her prize-winning screenplay, “Everyone’s Depressed,” explores the way literature helps students & faculty survive difficulty It was produced in 2001. Her essays on American drama have been published by Cambridge University Press. Her book, “Reading the Plays of Wendy Wasserstein”  was published by Applause in 2010.  She participated in the international conference “Why American Plays Matter,” hosted by Kean University and funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Her current play, DREAMS ON FIRE, combines her two interests – mental health and the Armenian Genocide as it explores epigenetics–the transmission of trauma across generations.
