Regional winners register to participate in the State Finals. The winners must prepare three poems (can be the same poems they used in the Regional Contest), and once these poems and the order of recitation are registered, they cannot be changed. As with the regional contest, one poem must be written prior to the 20th Century and one poem must by 25 lines or less. A single poem can satisfy both criteria.

All winners recite for two rounds, after which a group with the highest scores is chosen to participate in the third round. A winner and runner-up are selected after the third round. Only the winner travels to the National Finals.
